SYSTRAN Home Translator with Wordfast Classic

This video shows how to integrate SYSTRAN Home Translator as an MS-Word-based machine translation service in Wordfast Classic. Unlike with web-based services such as Google Translate or Microsoft Translator, texts translated with SYSTRAN Home Translator stay on your computer and there is no violation of any non-disclosure agreement a translator may have signed with a client.

Hi! I just watched your video and I was struggling to have a MT in Windows 7 and Word to replace my old Globalink in an old XP I have here, so I purchased the Home Translator.

I have Wordfast Pro and Classic forever.

So I installed Systran, and when I open Word and open Wordfast Classic, the Systran toolbar disappears.

    Can you help me? Please?

    Thank you,
    Vanessa

      Hi Vanessa,
Actually, Wordfast Classic will be able to use SYSTRAN even if its (= SYSTRAN’s) toolbar is not visible at the same time, but if you really want to see it, you can. You need to untick Keep only Standard, Formatting & Wordfast toolbars in Setup > General and to enable the following command in Pandora’s box: KeepTemplate=All (the command is case-sensitive and should be entered exactly as indicated).
      Hope this helps,
      Dominique

Thank you for your fast reply!! Thank you very much :O)

Now it is working, but when I press Alt+arrow down, Word opens a new document with the same text I have in the file that I am translating, makes the translation in the new document, and if I press Alt+arrow again, the document I was translating closes the segment without translation and the new document has the translation with a kind of ghost-color segment.

What am I doing wrong? and do you charge to help? You can charge if you want.

    Thank you!!

What happens if you right-click on a word in MS Word? Do you see a contextual menu with four options related to SYSTRAN?

One of these options should be: SYSTRAN Translate and Replace.

If so, you should be able to use the following command in Wordfast (Translation memory > MT > Ms-Word_based machine translation):

      Contextual, Translate and Replace

I found out what I was doing wrong. I was using a wrong parameter in the MT activation line.

Thank you very much for your help. I’m so sorry to disturb you!!

Anything you need, if I can help, let me know :O)

    Kind regards,
    Vanessa

Yes!, that is right! But as Systran here is installed in Portuguese, must be Contextual,Traduzir e Substituir — without space after the comma.

Now it is working really fine, thank you! :o)

Hello Dominique, how are you? Hope you are great.

Sorry to disturb you again, but it is not working any more. Yesterday the contextual menu disappeared after I changed the font in Normal.dot from Times New Roman into Calibri. Then I did a System Restore to September 10, removed and reinstalled the software four times, in English, and nothing.

Yesterday I tried until 4am and nothing.

Today the contextual menu is back, out of the blue, but when I try to use Wordfast with it an error message appears: Contextual,Translate and Replace (specified in Wordfast/Translation memory/MT) was not found.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thank you,
    Vanessa

      Hi Vanessa,

Do the SYSTRAN contextual menu options work in Word: can you right-click a word, select one of the options and get a translation from SYSTRAN? If not, I’m afraid the SYSTRAN is broken on your system and you will have to contact SYSTRAN for help on how to reinstall their software. The activation mechanism was perhaps upset by your system restore, or something like that.
Wordfast relies on SYSTRAN working OK in Word. If SYSTRAN doesn’t work in Word, Wordfast cannot interact with it.

      Cheers,

      Dominique

One word, yes, but before I could select the entire paragraph and it worked, now only word by word — that is, when I select the paragraph, the options disappear.

So I think you are right, I already sent a help request to the Systran’s support, thank you :o)

    Kind regards,
    Vanessa

Based on your description, it looks like your SYSTRAN setup is broken. This could have been caused by the system restore and the multiple uninstallations/reinstallations of the software. Maybe some registry keys will have to be reset or deleted. SYSTRAN tech support should be able to help you out if you explained what happened. Good luck! Dominique
