Hide/display spaces in mainstream CAT tools

This video shows how to display and hide spaces in four mainstream CAT tools: SDL Trados Studio 2011, Wordfast Pro, memoQ translator pro and Déjà Vu X2. This feature is built-in in all tools except Déjà Vu, and it works very much like in Microsoft Word. Déjà Vu needs to use specially modified fonts in order to be able to display spaces. The video also shows the way normal spaces and non-breaking spaces are treated.

Wordfast Pro and memoQ have a “smart quotes” feature: when French is the target language, non-breaking spaces are automatically inserted after opening quotes and before closing quotes. Studio 2011 and Déjà Vu X2 haven’t got such a feature in the current version as per September 2012.

memoQ has a paragraph mark icon (Show Non-Printing Characters) on the toolbar, next to Insert Special Character.

I don’t know how you get the time to stay up to date on all these CAT Tools and to translate

    Thanks anyway

In your video you select smart quote in WFP and your quotation mark automatically include the non-breaking space. With my WFP I get the curly quotation mark but the space is missing. Is there another setting to insert these non-breaking spaces with quotation marks?

Yes, I confirm Wordfast Pro 3.1.2 behaves like you said: non-breaking spaces are not added automatically with smart quotes. The video was recorded with an older version (probably 3.1.0 or 3.1.1) and that version appeared to behave differently. Contact Wordfast Pro tech support in order to have confirmation of this and ask for the feature to be restored (if needed).

  • Hi Dominique,
I was wondering if it is possible to set up automatic insertion of non-breaking spaces in Trados 2011.
    In Slovak, I need to include a non-breaking space after every one-lettre word. These are: a, i, o, u, s, v, z, k.
I have seen this post on Proz:
But when I do that, the letters mentioned above are replaced by $1+non-breaking space (the letter is rewritten).
    Am I doing something wrong?
Thank you in advance for your help!

I hope you have found a solution in the meantime, but just in case:
Make sure you chose “regular expression” as search mode.
