New Terminotix Toolbar for MS-Word vs. IntelliWebSearch

This video shows how the new Terminotix Toolbar for Microsoft Word works, and how it compares with the similar IntelliWebSearch. Both tools are free, but their makers would both want you to contribute a small amount of money for their use.

The Terminotix Toolbar is best suited for translators who work with English, French and perhaps Spanish, and for whom Microsoft Word is their main working environment, whether they use an MS-Word-based translation tool (Wordfast Classic, MetaTexis, Trados Workbench) or translate directly in Word.

IntelliWebSearch is more difficult to configure, but it’s also more flexible, as you can define your own resources (the Terminotix Toolbar is limited to the resources – 26 at the moment – that are hard-coded into the program). IntelliWebSearch can also be accessed from any Windows application, which makes it more suitable for translators who use standalone tools such as memoQ, Wordfast Pro, Déjà Vu, SDL Trados Studio etc.

The Terminotix Toolbar uses a custom browser window that has to be closed in order to return to MS-Word. IntelliWebSearch lets you use the browser of your choice and multiple search results can be kept open for reference in separate tabs. When used with Firefox and AdBlock, IntelliWebSearch will let you hide ads in sites that would otherwise display them, eg. Linguee, Collins, Larousse etc.

Update 8-Nov-2012: a new version of the Terminotix toolbar was released in early November 2012, which means the video may include outdated information.
